In Depth Research Television

Example one: Broadchurch

Broadchurch is a British television crime drama that was broadcast on ITV.  Broadchurch is a 2013 8-part ITV crime/detective drama, which is set in the eponymous town of Broadchurch. When Danny Latimer's corpse is found on the local beach recently arrived DI Alec Hardy leads the investigation, with the assistance of DS Ellie Miller. As they dig deeper into the goings on in the apparently quiet seaside town, secrets and shockers are uncovered, nobody could suspect the murderer. The show was a massive hit for ITV. A second series was aired in 2015, and a third 8-episode series aired in 2017, both equally as popular as the first series. I have chosen to analyse Broadchurch as I am planning to do a crime/detective drama for my coursework.

Example two: Death in Paradise

Death in Paradise is a British crime drama, that premiered in 2011 on BBC 1. A detective from the London Metropolitan Police Service is assigned to oversee the police station on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie. He has to deal with the high murder rate on the island and uncover the twisted mysteries behind the deaths of the victims, while also trying to come to grips with the foreign environment he's landed in. The show currently has the character DI Jack Mooney as the main character and detective.DI Richard Poole was the main character in the first three series and DI Humphrey Goodman in series 4-6. Much like Broadchurch I have chosen to analyse Death in Paradise as it fits the crime and detective genre, and that is the genre I am hoping to make myself.

Example three: Love island

Love Island is a British dating reality show. It aired for two series in 2005 and 2006 on ITV, but however was cancelled due to unpopularity. It has now returned to television and is aired on ITV 2; unlike the original series, the contestants are members of the public rather than celebrities. A group of singles move into a luxury villa in Spain in the hope of finding love and to have the summer of their life. During the 8 week long series, Caroline (the presenter) drops in unannounced to deliver shock twists and surprise announcements that will test the relationships between the Islanders. To remain in the villa, contestants must couple up and win over the public, as they ultimately decide who stays on Love Island and who goes. The final leaves the three most voted for couples in the villa, and the public must vote for their favorite couple. The couple with the most votes wins the prize of £50,000 and hopefully love.  There has been 4 of the new series, the first aired in summer 2015. I have chosen love island as it is a complete contrast to Broadchurch and Death in paradise and so gives me a wide look at all forms and genres of television.

Example four: Eastenders

The first episode of EastEnders aired on 19th February 1985. It is a British soap opera which has been broadcast on BBC 1 since 1985. At first there were two 30-minute episodes per week but since 2001 episodes have been broadcast every weekday apart from Wednesdays. It is one of the most continually watched programs in the UK, with thousands of loyal viewers tuning in every day to watch it making it forever popular. Residents of Albert Square in London's East End deal with life, love and loss. The show focuses on family relationships and a sense of belonging in the community, and has been known to tackle hard-hitting topics such as rape, racial prejudice, unemployment, euthanasia and homosexuality. The characters are all relateable, despite new characters coming and going all the time there are some families and characters that have been in every episode of the show since 1985.
